I use Solidworks and Linkage Bike Checker. Solidworks might work for a mac but its price is in the thousands. I would try to obtain a downloaded copy.

the shorter zoom would be better,or it would be my preferred choice. i found the 28-135 a bit slow, but it should be better for you over there. Ie brighter.

if your gonna buy new the 40d is a fine camera, but remember its the lenses that make the difference! and good luck with camera and recovery.
